Can free will be calculated?
I said I'd be back with the free will calculation, and here I am.
I spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to answer a perfectly reasonable question.
The question itself is old enough to have acquired dust. Philosophers have been circling it for centuries, carving the world into increasingly elaborate camps: determinists, libertarians, compatibilists, hard incompatibilists. Entire intellectual traditions have been built upon whether human beings are authors of their actions or merely exceptionally articulate dominoes.
I wanted to ask something slightly different.
What if choice is not a metaphysical exception to the universe, but another process within it? Complicated, certainly. Strange, absolutely. But still amenable to mathematics.
What if free will is not outside the system?
What if it is a property of the system?
The framework I developed treats choice as a history-dependent stochastic process: every decision carries the weighted residue of decisions that came before it, interacting with priors supplied by the wider world. Push that process to infinity, and one of three things happens:
• You become deterministic and lock into your own past (hello, Pólya urns).
• You dissolve into noise (a very sophisticated coin toss).
• Or you inhabit a strange middle ground: structured unpredictability.
Using exponentially fading memory kernels, KL divergence, extended entropy, computational irreducibility, and a dash of quantum indeterminacy, I argue that free will is neither perfect freedom nor perfect causation.
It is the capacity to reshape uncertainty into intention.
In other words, we are not free despite mathematics.
We might be free precisely because mathematics refuses to let even the universe take shortcuts.
A small attempt at turning one of philosophy’s oldest arguments into an engineering problem.
It is also an attempt to take seriously a suspicion I’ve had for years, that being human consists neither in obeying the past nor escaping it entirely.
We carry our previous selves everywhere. In habits mistaken for personality, in memories, in the persistence of childhood decisions that continue to cast shadows over adult lives. The past is not something we leave behind but a weight function we keep recalculating.
But perhaps freedom depends precisely on the fact that this weighting is imperfect.
If every experience retained equal authority forever, we would become deterministic archives of ourselves, endlessly reinforcing our earliest trajectories. And if none of it mattered at all, we would dissolve into randomness, untethered from any coherent identity. The mathematics points toward a narrower possibility, that a system that remembers selectively, forgets productively, and continually works with the significance of what came before.
